Azure Virtual Desktops and Entra ID solution
The Challenge
Fine Ledgers operated a traditional on-premise IT infrastructure that relied heavily on local servers for desktop hosting and Active Directory-based identity management.
As a mid-sized tax and professional services firm based in Ottawa, Canada, the organization needed a secure, scalable, and modern cloud environment to support remote work, improve access control, and simplify IT management. They also faced growing operational costs tied to local server maintenance and provincial sales taxes on physical hardware — prompting a shift toward cloud-based solutions that align with modern tax and business models.
The Solution
We implemented a cloud-first transformation that modernized Fine Ledgers’ entire IT environment. The project centered around Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) for secure, flexible workspace delivery and Microsoft Entra ID for unified identity management.
This migration replaced the aging on-premise systems with a modern, secure, and cost-efficient cloud infrastructure, enabling remote access, stronger data protection, and simplified operations.
Key components of the transformation included:
- Virtual Desktop Hosting: Replaced the local server room and heavy CAPEX spending with Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) hosted in the cloud, providing a scalable, pay-as-you-go model.
- Core Identity & Access: Migrated from traditional on-premise Active Directory (AD) to Microsoft 365 with Entra ID, delivering centralized cloud identity and seamless authentication.
- Tax Model Alignment: Transitioned from provincial sales tax (PST) on physical hardware to harmonized sales tax (HST) on cloud services, optimizing costs under Ontario’s 13% HST structure.
- Operational Efficiency: Eliminated manual patching and high-maintenance server operations, replacing them with automated updates, vendor-managed infrastructure, and built-in disaster recovery.
The Results
1. Enhanced Identity and Security
Unified Access Management: Entra ID established a single, trusted identity source for all users, ensuring secure, seamless access across AVD desktops and M365 applications (Teams, Exchange, SharePoint).
Improved Security Posture: Conditional access policies and multi-factor authentication (MFA) significantly reduced unauthorized access risks.
2. Operational Agility
Rapid Workforce Scaling: New hires and contract teams can now receive a fully configured AVD workspace within minutes — a process that previously took days due to hardware provisioning.
Reduced IT Overhead: Automated patching, built-in disaster recovery, and cloud monitoring freed the IT team to focus on strategic initiatives and governance instead of daily maintenance.
By migrating to Azure Virtual Desktop and Microsoft Entra ID, Fine Ledgers Solutions achieved a secure, scalable, and future-ready IT environment.
The shift not only reduced total cost of ownership (TCO) and eliminated high on-premise maintenance costs but also mitigated Ottawa’s commercial property tax burden — all while empowering their workforce with modern, cloud-based productivity tools.
